ROJoson and Support Groups in the Philippines
What is a support group?
Support Group = a group of people with common experiences and concerns who provide emotional and moral support for one another.
What are the support groups that I have initiated in the Philippines?
Philippine Stoma Association – 1979 in Philippine General Hospital (now – Ostoma Association of the Philippines c/o Ms. Nelda Escueta, Philippine General Hospital)
Cancer Crusaders Club – 1988 in Manila Doctors Hospital (now MDH Cancer Crusaders Club c/o Dr. Elsie Dancel, Manila Doctors Hospital)
These are my legacies on support groups in the Philippines, my legacies to the Philippines, to the Filipino people.
Philippine Stoma Association – an association of Filipino patients with stoma (colostomy, ileostomy, ileal conduits, etc.) based in the Philippine General Hospital – created in 1979 by yours truly.
Oath-taking of first batch of officers.
Enterostomal therapist – Ms. de los Reyes taking care of a patient with colostomy (this is the forerunner of the Enterostomal Therapy Nurses Association of the Philippines). If I recall correctly, Ms. Nelda Escueta was one the volunteers in enterostomal therapy in 1979 or 1980. Soon after I finished my residency in the Philippine General Hospital in June 1981, she spearheaded the development of the enterostomal therapy in the Philippines. I think she is currently the President of the Association.
The Ostomy Association of the Philippines – the Philippine Stoma Association of the present.
The Cancer Crusaders Club – a club of cancer crusaders established in 1988 by yours truly. This was adopted by Manila Doctors Hospital in 2001 to become MDH Cancer Crusaders Club. Since then, it has been sustained by Dr. Elsie Dancel and the MDH Oncology and Tumor Board.
NOTE: On December 2, 2012, MDH Cancer Crusaders Club will hold its 25th Annual Christmas Get-Together, its Silver Anniversary at the Penthouse of Manila Doctors Hospital.
