Objective:

The Filipino community is made aware of the difference between breast screening and breast cancer screening program.

There is a need to be aware of the concept of screening, screening program, breast screening program and breast cancer screening program to guide the Filipino community on what to do and what the health care professionals and providers are doing on these issues.

Definitions of “screening”

The examination of a group of usually asymptomatic individuals to detect those with a high probability of having or developing a given disease.

The examination of a group to separate well persons from those who have an undiagnosed pathologic condition or who are at high risk.

Definition of a “program” – a plan of action aimed at accomplishing a clear objective, with details on what work is to be done, by whom, when, and what means or resources will be used

A breast screening program – a plan of action and a set of activities systematically formulated with the objective of early detection of breast disorders and diseases so as to minimize the following:

  • complications of the diseases
  • premature death from the diseases
  • difficulties in treating advanced diseases
  • cost of medical treatment

A breast cancer screening program – a plan of action and a set of activities systematically formulated with the objective of early detection of breast cancers so as to minimize the following:

  • complications of breast cancers
  • premature death from breast cancers
  • difficulties in treating advanced breast cancers
  • cost of medical treatment of advanced breast cancers

Breast screening program and breast cancer screening program

A breast screening program is applicable to all kinds of breast disorders and diseases, including breast cancers.  A breast cancer screening program refers specifically to breast cancers.

With breast cancers being considered a dreaded disease in the community (Phiippines and global), when one uses the phrase “breast screening program,” one usually refers to “breast cancer screening program.”  To facilitate communication and avoid confusion, however, it is recommended that “breast cancer screening program” be used if screening for breast cancers is being referred to.

Breast screening program and breast cancer screening program for the Filipino females in the Philippines

The focus should be on breast cancer screening program as breast cancer is a dreaded disease in the Philippines.  While doing the breast cancer screening, screening for other breast diseases is concomitantly and invariably accomplished.

A breast cancer screening program for the Filipino females in the Philippines is a plan of action and a set of activities systematically formulated with the objective of early detection of breast cancers so as to minimize the following:

  • complications of breast cancers
  • premature death from breast cancers
  • difficulties in treating advanced breast cancers
  • cost of medical treatment of advanced breast cancers

The screening is done on females with NO symptoms and who are at high risk of developing breast cancer.

The screening tools can be a single or multiple (multi-modal).

Benefit, risk, cost, and availability factors must be considered in the selection of screening tools. The tools must have a reasonable accuracy and net benefit, with acceptable cost, doable, and attractive to the community.
