Breast Cancer Screening Procedures and Tools – 12oct8

Objective:

The Filipino community is made aware of the different breast cancer screening procedures and tools being done / proposed in the Philippines and abroad.

There is a need to be aware of  the different breast cancer screening procedures and tools to guide the Filipino community on what to do and what the health care professionals and providers are doing on these issues.

Question:

What are the various screening procedures and tools for breast cancer that are being  advocated  and proposed in the Philippines and abroad?

  • Breast Self-examination
  • Physical Examination of the Breast (Clinical Breast Examination)
  • Mammography
  • Ultrasound
  • Breast Elastography
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • Thermography
  • Tumor Markers
  • Tomosynthesis
  • Molecular imaging
  • PET Scan
  • Cone Beam CT Scan
  • Others

*All these screening procedures and tools are being done singly or in combination (multi-modal)  They have to be evaluated as to their usefulness and indications.

Benefit, risk, cost, and availability factors must be considered in the selection of screening tools. The tools must have a reasonable accuracy and net benefit, with acceptable cost, doable and sustainable, and attractive to the community.

I will give my thoughts, perceptions, opinions and recommendations on what should be done in another write-up.
