Philippine floods a man-made disaster – August 9, 2012

Disasters are usually classified into natural and non-natural disasters (usually man-made or man-related disasters).

Typhoons and their associated floods are usually classified under natural disasters.

Nowadays, the dichotomy in the classification does not hold true anymore, at least not all the times.

Look at this heading in the news: “Philippine floods, a man-made disaster.”   Yes, what is currently happening in the Philippines, as illustrated by the August 7-9, 2012 storm with no name, is that the flood is now more of a man-made disaster than a natural disaster.   Let us all be aware, be prepared, avoid and mitigate.
