Head and Neck Health and Wellness [Head and Neck Consciousness Week – 4th Week of April] (Continuation of ROJoson’s Write-up)

Head and neck health and head and neck wellness will be used interchangeably.

Head and neck wellness is a state wherein there is NO head and neck issue (in the domain of symptoms, diseases, and fear and anxiety even in the absence of disease) that affects the physical, mental and social well-being and / or the socioeconomic productivity of a person.

Head and neck issue includes anything under the sun but usually can be categorized into three areas or domains, namely, symptoms referable to the head and neck; head and neck diseases; and fear and anxiety of head and neck disorder, specially cancer, even in the absence of real disease.

Head and neck wellness is not limited to absence of abnormality or disease.

This concept is deduced from the World Health Organization’s definition of HEALTH and the common definitions of WELLNESS. “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” (WHO)

Head and neck wellness in a person also includes the following concepts:

  • illness is NOT an impediment to well-being;
  • illness and health are NOT two opposite poles, but two dimensions; and
  • one can be physically ill and yet can feel healthy.

Note: For the patients with head and neck cancers, especially those in remission, they can be considered healthy.  They can feel healthy even if they have a history of cancer.

How to promote head and neck health and wellness:

  • Know the basic facts on anatomy and functions of head and neck organs and tissues.
  • Know what are considered normal head and neck conditions.
  • Know the basic facts on head and neck disorders and diseases.  Learn how to recognize them.
  • Prevent those that are preventable.
  • Avoid unwarranted phobia of head and neck disorders and diseases.  Be well-informed of facts.
  • Consult head and neck specialists as early as possible for any symptom suggestive of head and neck disorders and diseases.
  • Have treatment as early as possible for diagnosed head and neck disorders and diseases.

This person shown in the picture below most likely is in a state of head and neck wellness.
