Patients with Breast Concerns in the Philippines – Where Do They Usually Go for Consult?

In the Philippines, there certainly are and will be Filipino and non-Filipino patients who have and will have breast concerns at one time or another.

The first question of interest is where do they usually go for consult?

Currently, the usual things that are happening along this question of interest are the following:

1.       Pediatric patients with a breast concern whose parents do not know who are the breast specialists in the Philippines go to paediatricians who in turn will refer them to the “general surgeons” if needed.

2.       Adult female patients with a breast concern who do not know who are the breast specialists in the Philippines go to the obstetrician-gynecologists who in turn will refer  them to the “general surgeons” if needed.

3.       Adult male patients with a breast concern who do not know who are the breast specialists in the Philippines go to any certified physicians (usually non-general  surgeons) who will refer them to the “general surgeons” if needed.

4.       Adult female patients with established breast cancer go the medical oncologists who in turn will refer them to the “general surgeons” if needed.

5.       Those who are made aware of the presence of medical clinics advertised as breast clinics or breast centers  in the community usually go directly to these clinics or centers.  Frequently, these breast clinics or breast centers are manned by “general surgeons.”

6.       Those who are made aware of the presence of physicians who are considered and known to be breast specialists in the community usually go directly  to these physicians. Usually, these breast specialists are graduates of “general surgery” training program who have special interest and therefore, devote a lot of their time in the study and management of patients with breast conditions and disorders.

Some follow-through questions (to be answered in the very near future):

1.       In the Philippines, which physicians have extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of breast conditions and disorders?

2.       In the Philippines, which physicians are considered as breast specialists?

3.       In the Philippines, where should patients with breast concern go for consult?

4.       In the Philippines, what is the current set-up of breast clinics or centers?  Ideally, how should they be?
